I find the attacks on Columbus, thus Western European culture, tiresome and currently politically correct. Sure, others, as you mention, came to the Americas before hand, but they didn't do much with it. Where is their heritage to us? Discovery is a sense of awe and wonder and a deep desire to know more, which is what happened after Columbus. The Vikings, the Chinese and others had no idea what they had stumbled upon, and if they went home and told others about it, those folks did not much care, unlike the Western Europeans of Columbus' era.
